A NOVEL COUPLED FE/SPH APPROACH FOR SHAPED CHARGE MODELING

Abstract


A novel approach for modeling shaped charges is presented, using Finite Elements for the high explosive and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics for the liner. The performance of the method is compared with classical Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling of high explosives for the test case of a 79 mm shaped charge. The classical and new method are compared with each other and with experimental results. While both modeling techniques provide good overall results with minor shortcomings, the new approach provides better accuracy in modeling the jet tip velocity, while requiring only half the runtime. In combination with the easy integrability of finite element models into larger models, the new approach seems to be a promising future method.
